Brighton is a bustling city full of events and celebrations. Brighton is always being rejuvenated and restored keeping this grand sea side resort a great place to visit. The sea front hotels and town houses are the first to be hit by the harsh elements and require work to keep them in good condition and to their natural beauty. These types of buildings are part of Brighton’s history and just one part of what makes Brighton a beautiful city, however they do require special works to repair any damage and due to the sheer height of some of the hotels and buildings, scaffolding in Brighton is a popular option for access to update these remarkable buildings. Sussex Scaffolding participate with such projects and are proud to be a part of making Brighton an exceptional city. They also assisted with supplying Heras fencing for the Ice rink at the Brighton Pavilion over the Christmas period. Sussex Scaffolding can also supply scaffolding for events such as staging for music events or crowd barriers for marathons and other events. There is no scaffold job to big or small for this company.

Buy the Surfin Bird single now and help stop Xfactor getting to number 1
You would have seen in my previous post that Matt Whistler from Brighton is trying to get Surfin Bird to number 1 for Christmas to stop X Factor taking the number one spot.
Apparently Surfin’ Bird by the Trashmen is number 3, so lets all help push it to number one.
I think I have found the cheapest way to get the single for 49p.
Thanks for supporting this effort and good luck Surfin Bird!

Metrodeco Tea Room in Kemp Town
On my quest to check out more establishments in Kemp Town, I decided today to head over there from Hove and go for lunch at Metrodeco which is Brighton’s only 1930’s Parisian style tea salon. I would definitely call this art deco style tea room unique and sitting on an art deco chair at an art deco table is definitely an experience I’ve never had before!
The menu is good and has an excellent choice of tea (eighteen different blends), plenty of cakes and various choices of coffee. Currently for lunch there are only sandwiches, however apparently they are soon introducing a menu with more choices. I went for the egg and cress sandwiches which were freshly made and lovely along with a pot of tea which I managed to get four good size cups from which is excellent value! As any of my friends will know, I am a bit partial to a good cake, so I wasn’t disappointed by the variety on offer! I went for the chocolate and beetroot cake which was stunning, not too heavy and wanting more once my plate was scraped clean.
In the basement of the shop is a showroom with lots of art deco items for sale. Whether you are after some art deco wine glasses, a stunning sofa, or an amazing walnut dining room table with chairs they have it all!
So why not go back in time and get a glimpse of the 1920’s, 30’ and 40’s in St James Street, Kemptown!

City Books
Most of us are guilty of buying books online from corporate giants like Amazon and this is the main reason why even the larger book shops such as Borders have shut. So imagine how hard it is for the small independent book shops to compete in such an unfair market!
City Books on the Western Road are a lovely little book shop and in my view a proper book shop that don’t use the product placement tactics that the larger shops use to make you buy more books than you wanted! Their shop spread over two floors and filled with a brilliant range of books, including an extensive selection of books of local interest. City Books also organise regular literary evenings, which are held at the Old Market just down the road from the shop and guest speakers have included John Simpson, the hilarious Vic Reeves and Brightons local and well known musician Nick Cave. The shop has also been shortlisted twice for the ‘Independent Bookshop of the Year Award’, so make a beeline for the Brighton and Hove boundary and visit this bookshop.
OK the internet stores may offer books at a slightly cheaper price, but the service and ability to touch, feel and read the books surely outweighs the extra few pence. Go on, go on, support a quality local shop!

Dockerills Locksmith and Ironmongers
Dockerills is an ironmongers that has been in business for over one hundred years. This is one of the shops I can vividly remember when I was a small child over 30 years ago, visiting with my father, when needing a new tool for the garden, or a new key for the front door. Dockerills have been around much longer than the likes of B&Q and Homebase and kept up an excellent service and have barely changed during their 100 year reign! The amount of different items they stock is phenomenal and have a real treasure trove of goodies, especially for a DIY freak like myself. Whether you need a locksmith, a name plate for the front door, a coal skuttle for the fire place, a broom, or some chicken wire fencing for garden, or compost for the flower beds, they have it all!
Dockerills is one of only a few shops in Brighton and Hove that I am positive will be around in another 100 year! Well done and keep up the hard work!

The Mad Hatter Cafe
A popular predominantly vegetarian cafe near Waitrose on the Western Road is the Mad Hatter Cafe. Now if you are a carnivore like myself then don’t look away, carry on reading, as this cafe is so good and a couple of dishes do contain ham and a bit of fish!
The atmosphere here is so relaxed that it feels like all your troubles are on hold for the duration of the experience. The menu is excellent and on a Sunday morning there nothing better than chilling out, eating a healthy breakfast (I’m rather partial to the muesli with fresh fruit and yoghurt) and a good newspaper. The staff are very friendly and the food is prepared and served in good time. Visiting The Mad Hatter is a good excuse for not visiting ‘The Mans’ worst nightmare (the supermarket). So men if ‘the missus’ wants to go to Waitrose then either take her to the cafe first to prepare, or if she’s adamant about going straight away then just tell her that you’ll catch her up!

Remember April
I sat outside Capers Cafe yesterday having a coffee and listened to three musicians on the corner of the road performing some really good jazz numbers. So I took the opportunity to interview them to find out more. They are a Brighton based band called Remember April and you can listen to the interview below along with a live performance of one of their songs called “Stories of You”.
So why not head along to the The Albion pub in Hove to see them, where they perform every second Sunday in the month, or see them at the Hand in Hand pub in Kemp Town where they play once a month.
They’ve also got a gig coming up on 2nd March 2010 at the Wick Inn pub in Hove.
